Scored a 1.5Ghz 12" PowerBook G4 off "the online classifieds" for $30. It works great except the keyboard didn't work, and there's a little glitch on the right side of the screen, but I don't care that much about that.
Took the keyboard out and popped off the keys. A few were pretty sticky. Cleaned it all up with some alcohol, let it dry, put it back on. Still nothing. Hooked up an iBook keyboard just to see if something would work, and it did, but of course was mapped all wrong.
Next step, I took the original keyboard and completely stripped it down. Peeled everything off, then took the circuit sheet, and peeled it apart. You could tell something had been spilled on it and soaked into the space between the sheets at some point. Cleaned all that out with alcohol. Now I was able to get about 10 keys to work. 4, r, d, Return, Enter, and a few others, but still not the rest. I'm not able to get all the stains out, because the circuit sheet really has even more thinner layers and there's stuff in there. I don't think I can peel into there without breaking the traces.
I was thinking of buying a new keyboard, but most places want $100 or so, even on ebay, unless you get a non US english one. But then I remembered that even when using the iBook keyboard, only about 10 keys actually produced any response, so I'm wondering if it's even worth it. I stripped the machine down some more and I don't see any evidence that the spill got beyond the keyboard.
What do you guys think?

Hello,
I agree with Klaus1, however I wouldn't by a new keyboard for an obsolete computer. Look for a broken PowerBook G4 12" on eBay that you could strip for parts or a working used keyboard.

You have already wasted $30 on an obsolete non-working computer, so why not waste another few dollars for a keyboard?
