Deleting a mail account on iPhone completely

Mail, Contact & Calendar
Deleting an IMAP mail account on iPhone doesn't actually delete it nor its messages, just hides them. In other words, if I delete te account and then re-enter all the same login details, the messages are right there without need to download. How can I truly delete the account so that I can start from scratch and download the messages from the server? Is there a way?

That's obviously the first thing I did.

I know but instead of showing the 1000 most recent e-mails it skips whole weeks, going back to 2011. It's really a mystery how this happened without any of my doing. Just to reiterate: on the computer there are all the messages perfectly showing up. On the iPhone only with big gaps. If I could completely delete the account with no trace, I could re-add that account with the same login details and it would force to download the 1000 most recent messages, just like when I first set up the phone.

The reason I want to start from scratch on the iPhone is that for some reason not all messages show up on the phone and I want to make sure they are synced perfectly. So I thought that pulling all the messages from the server will fix this. But I don't seem to be able to do this.

Do you have the option to turn it off?

This must have something to do with being an IMAP account and messages staying on the server. My guess is if you logged in to the account on a computer and actually deleted messages from the server they would then disappear from your phone if you deleted the account on your phone and then reset the account on the phone

Thanks for answering, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. When I go to Settings/General/Usage/Manage Storage it still lists Mail with 54 MB of data, which would be zero if it had been successfully deleted. And alas, when I add the account again, the messages show up right there. Can you think of another solution?
