Hoping this does not violate TremsOfUse, as it is not direct criticism of Apple products:
Project for you: Raspberry Pi.
Small computer ... 3.5 in x 2.2 in. HDMI out, ARM processor, 512 MB RAM, 2xUSB, Etherport, RCA video out and sound out.
$35, when they have it in stack which should be within 3 months.
Many people download the "media server" version, and turn it into their own internet capable (NetFLix, Hulu+) server in a small package that runs on 5V/1A power supply. You control how it operatoes and use a wifi dongle to log in from across the room.

True, it looks like the apple tv marketing strategy was designed by steve ballmer himself, shame.
Regarding price, there are some ugly looking android boxes for the same money, and you can install apps for streaming, and delete things you dont like, ( like the wall street journal)
At the present time any linux or android box seems a better option.
Sincerely hope apple fixes that.

it's cheap
they might be taking a loss which they maybe think they can earn back from saled from itunes and the likes
allowing any stream app could hurt that earning

Apple Tv is a great product from the hardware point of view, now, SADLY it is very limited by software.
for example:
you can not install any stream app from the sources you like, there are great free and legitimate tv channels out there, offering streaming through apps, instead apple limits you to watch Wall street journal, (probably their most discusting feature) why they do that? They seem more interested in selling their itunes inventory than to provide a decent service for the user.
If you like youtube and netflix, thats pretty much all the decent you can get on the apple tv.
The potential is huge, but apple has to open up to developers ASAP and allow users to install streaming apps at least.
games?, browser? that would be too much to ask for.

Obviously it depends what you want to do. For me using it to rent and buy from iTunes and mirror my mac (check yours supports mirror) I have found it excellent. You get negative comments here but do remember few people bother to log on to say they have a fully working purchase as expected!
