Spotlight and mdfind

I have several pdf files (research papers) on my Mac. I used to search using spotlight e.g. filename -name kind:pdf. It used to work fine, but since Lion, I started having trouble with it as it didn't always show the correct file. I then tried mdfind command mdfind -name filename.pdf to serach files on my Mac and to open files suing the ommand mdfind -name filename.pdf | xargs -0 open. It worked fine until 10.8.3. Yesterday I made a clean install of 10.8.3, and since then I've noticed that it doesn't work. What I mean mdfind -name filename.pdf returns the correct file, but when I try to open it using mdfind -name filename.pdf | xargs -0 open command, it funnily says that file doesn't exist. Can anyone suggest how can I fix this problem?
